Sara rejects Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022 elections

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has rejected anew calls for her to run for president with her father, the incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte, as her running mate.

In rejecting the call, Duterte-Carpio said “continuity is not based on kinship.”

It was the President’s chief legal counsel, Salvador Panelo, who floated the idea of a “Duterte-Duterte” tandem in 2022, with the mayor as president and the older Duterte as vice president, a report by Manila Times said.

However, Duterte-Carpio insisted that she is not keen on running for president in 2022 if the purpose is to just to continue the gains of her father’s administration.

“Continuity is not based on kinship. Anybody can continue the gains of a previous administration, President Duterte did that for President Aquino,” Duterte-Carpio told The Manila Times in a text message.

Duterte-Carpio was referring to his father’s predecessor, former president Benigno Aquino III.

In the report, Panelo said that a “Duterte-Duterte” tandem “has no legal impediment” as the Chief Executive could still run for vice president when his term expires in 2022.

“The continuity of the Duterte leadership is the real issue here,” Panelo said in a speech at a dinner-fellowship hosted by Bayambang town Mayor Cesar Quiambao and attended by this province’s prominent political leaders on Saturday.

Panelo said that the President has shown a strong political will to implement economic reforms and clean government in the country like his campaign against illegal drugs, corruption, criminality, insurgency and poverty.

Panelo was also confident that the daughter-father team would be acceptable to Filipinos as this was nothing new.

He cited Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Benigno Aquino 3rd, daughter and son of late presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Corazon Aquino, have assumed the highest office in the land.

Panelo said Duterte-Duterte tandem already happened in Davao City when Duterte and his daughter ran for mayor and vice mayor.

Duterte served as the vice mayor of Davao City when his daughter was the mayor from 2010 to 2013.

Global COVID-19 Cases Breach 100 million

The global coronavirus disease cases or COVID-19 has reached 100 million on Wednesday, January 27 according to the tally made by Johns Hopkins University.

The grim milestone comes three months since global cases reached 50 million cases and over a year since the first recorded case was discovered in Wuhan, China.

The U.S. remains the leader in recorded cases of the coronavirus with more than 25 million infections. India ranks second with more than 10.5 million cases, and Brazil third with almost nine million, according to Johns Hopkins.

Out of the total 100 million cases, the global death toll is now at over 2 million, while recovered cases have now reached 55.3 million.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has grown at a rate of roughly 4-5 million cases per week since December according to the World Health Organization.

The 100 million mark comes as many parts of the world are struggling to contain emerging new variants of the virus including the more transmissible ones from the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Brazil.

Mubadala Health is mobilizing its network to administer COVID-19 vaccines to members of the public in support of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) and the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi in implementing a robust vaccination program against COVID-19.

According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), these vaccines are made available at locations in Abu Dhabi City, Al Ain and Mussafah, with the potential to expand the program in the near future.

This will be provided free of charge to UAE citizens and residents aged 16 and over at various locations including Mubadala Health’s own medical health facilities.

The vaccine is immediately available via Mubadala Health to citizens and residents aged 16 and older with an Emirates ID and the free AlHosn app downloaded on their mobile phones.

Al Nowais added that their Abu Dhabi Telemedicine Center (ADTC) will be answering email inquiries and directing the public to their nearest center.

Dubai COVID-19 Vaccination Program To End In December 2021

In a series of videos released by the Dubai Media Office, Dr. Farida Al Khaja, CEO of Clinical Support Services and Nursing Sector, chairperson of the COVID-19 Vaccination Steering Committee at the DHA, explained the current vaccination campaign.

The Dubai Health Authority explains further the COVID-19 vaccination roadmap for Dubai residents.

Al Khaja said that the vaccination campaign will only last for one year and Dubai is set to finish it by December 2021. The government’s target is to vaccinate 70 percent of the Dubai population.

The health official added that the vaccine is free of charge but it’s not mandatory. People can book their vaccination appointment through the DHA app or call 800 342 if they have questions regarding the vaccination program.

Dubai is currently in the first phase of the vaccination until March 2021 covering all the priority categories. The second phase should start by April 2021.

People who were infected by the virus can be vaccinated three months after their infection. Pregnant, breastfeeding women and those who are planning to get pregnant, people with immunodeficiency disease and severe allergy are being discouraged to take their vaccine shots.

People are still required to wear masks, travels will be easy for people who have been vaccinated but they should finish the dosage requirement of the vaccine.

Health experts do not recommend taking more than one brand of COVID-19 vaccine.

PNP Report Confirms Flight Attendant Dacera Died Of Natural Causes

The PNP Crime Laboratory’s medico-legal report dated January 11 reveals that Dacera died due to a medical condition: Aortic aneurysm.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has confirmed that flight attendant Christine Dacera died of natural causes, ruling out the crime of homicide that authorities first alleged the case to be.

Medico-legal officer Police Lt. Col. Joseph Palmero stated that Dacera suffered from loss of blood due to the ruptured aorta that killed her within a few hours, citing a report on the preliminary investigation on the case.

“Rape and/or drug overdose will not result (in) the development of aneurysms. Even overdose and ruptured aneurysm are two different conditions and cannot be both included as cause of death of a patient. Based on the available information on hand the manner of death is classified as natural death,” said Palmero in a report from ABS-CBN News.

The report furthered that neither alcohol nor any recreational drug could cause defects on the aorta, removing suspicions that Dacera’s usage of such substances on New Year’s Eve might have had an impact on her death.

New Zealand Records No New COVID-19 Cases In 24 Hours

In a statement provided by New Zealand’s Ministry of Health, it said they have already identified 16 close contacts of the country’s first case. Fifteen of those people have already tested negative.

New Zealand has no new reported cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

This is after it confirmed their first case of coronavirus in the community for more than two months.

An additional close contact is awaiting their test result.

A total of 157 staff from the managed isolation facility at Pullman Hotel have been tested, along with 192 guests currently in the facility. Of those, 30 still have test results to come, and all others have returned negative results.

The first case was identified as a 56-year-old woman who was in hotel quarantine for two weeks at Pullman Hotel in Auckland where it is believed that she came into contact with another traveller infected with the South African variant of COVID-19.

She was able to travel throughout the community while infectious for at least nine days after her release from quarantine and visited around 30 venues north of Auckland.

Quarantine-free travel to Australia from this country has been suspended for at least 72 hours because of this.

Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt said their decision to suspend it was because this case was of “significant concern”. They also considered the increased possibility of transmission due to this South African variant.

PCR Swab Tests Now Mandatory Every Seven Days For Unvaccinated Government Employees

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources has issued an updated circular regarding quarantine guidelines for workers who tested positive for COVID-19, as well as those who were in close contact with COVID-positive individuals.

The circular stipulates that the quarantine period for employees who haven’t received the vaccine will be deducted from their annual leave. Those who have used up their annual leaves and require quarantine will be considered unpaid leaves.

Here are the guidelines:

Vaccinated workers: An individual who has received two doses of the vaccine should undergo a quarantine period specified by health authorities and must work from home during the set period.

Unvaccinated workers: Quarantine period will be deducted from their annual leave, and will be considered as unpaid leaves if they don’t have any annual leave balances left. They may also be required to work from home on a case-to-case basis, depending on the nature of their job.

PCR tests required. All unvaccinated employees are required to undergo a PCR test every seven days for monitoring purposes.

The PCR Testing Services In Dubai

Five testing centers will cease to offer its polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing services.

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) announced on Tuesday, Jan. 19, that the following centers include the PCR testing stations in Dubai Mall, Al Nakheel Mall, Mirdif City Center, and as well as Al Hamriya Port Majlis and Al Shabab Al-Ahli Club.

Those who still want to avail of the PCR testing services on a walk-in basis may visit Deira City Center and Mall of the Emirates.

DHA facilities that require appointment booking for PCR testing are Al Rashidiya Majlis, Jumeirah 1 Port of Majlis and Al Nasr Club.

US President Joe Biden Daily Brief

Don’t be lulled. Last week’s peaceful U.S. presidential transition may engender a false sense of security, the Department of Homeland Security said yesterday. Without citing specific plots, it warned that “violent domestic extremists' ' pose an imminent threat stoked by anger over the transition and grievances “fueled by false narratives.” The statement was a departure from Trump administration policy, which reportedly downplayed domestic terrorism.

1. DHS Warns of Domestic Terror Threat

One former Trump administration homeland security official said such warnings were useful, as they elicit support from “the watchful public” to identify threats. Conservative critics, meanwhile, claimed that the new administration was aiming to “harass and investigate” political rivals.

2. Biden Amps Up Global Warming Fight

In a continuing series of single-issue days for his new administration, President Joe Biden devoted Wednesday to climate change, calling it an “existential” issue and firing off executive orders to address it. That included pausing oil and gas leases on federal land, creating jobs in renewable energy and supporting minority communities disproportionately impacted by pollution. “This is no time for small measures,” said Biden, who campaigned heavily on the climate issue last year. His plans go much further even than those of former President Barack Obama, including involving the Department of Defense and naming a climate czar: former Secretary of State John Kerry.

3. WHO Scientists Begin Wuhan Probe

Will they see through the haze? Investigators from the World Health Organization have completed their quarantine and can begin probing the origins of the pandemic in China, questioning researchers, medical professionals and even produce vendors from the Wuhan seafood market where COVID-19 is believed to have originated. But Chinese media has recently promoted unlikely theories that the disease started elsewhere, like Italy or the U.S., while the earliest known infections have been traced to China. It’s unclear how much access they’ll have to those who’d volunteer information, like the son of a COVID-19 fatality who believes authorities withheld information at the pandemic’s outset.

4. Day Traders Smack Down Hedge Funds

Is it bubble trouble? Wall Street’s titans worry that the latest investment trend may derail their profitable pandemic ride. WallStreetBets, a group of traders on Reddit, rallied members to buy up GameStop share, nearly ruined top hedge fund Melvin Capital yesterday by forcing it to buy more of those shares to cover its failed bet that the video game store chain’s stock would decline. Analysts worry that such wild retail-level trading may signal a market bubble in danger of popping. Many other stocks went down yesterday as economic worries lopped at least 2 percent off of major indexes, dragging today’s Asian trading similarly lower.

1. Proud Boys Leader Reportedly Spied for Feds

Just when you think you know someone. Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, the Proud Boys leader who was arrested before the Capitol attack, was a federal informant, Reuters reports, citing a 2014 court transcript. In it, Tarrio’s own attorney and a prosecutor say he provided information that helped government cases involving human trafficking, gambling and illegal drugs. Tarrio denied the report, saying “I don’t recall any of this.” Meanwhile, QAnon conspiracy theorist Rep. Looking at Earth from above, “you develop an instant global consciousness,” as one astronaut described it. It’s what The Overview Effect explained in 1987: Philosophical differences seem so trivial looking down on the planet, and Frank White, its author, has spent decades promoting that perspective. But the book languished and White gained little traction — until now, OZY reports. His vision is seen by figures such as astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson as a counterbalance to the divisive “tribes effect,” which fosters conflict like the Capitol attack. For White, “we have a choice as to whether we’re going to work together” to keep spaceship Earth functioning.

3. Oklahoma Tries to Ditch Its Hydroxychloroquine

It’s “useful for any number of ailments.” Unfortunately for Oklahoma taxpayers, COVID-19 isn’t one of the ailments hydroxychloroquine demonstrably works on. Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt didn’t want to miss out on the medical marvel being touted by then-President Donald Trump. So while the only other state to pay for the drug, Utah, canceled its order, Oklahoma bought 1.2 million pills that cost $2 million and is now trying to return them to a California distributor for a refund. While it’s unclear if the state will succeed, it’s tasked its attorney general’s office with working on the issue.

Among the AED500 worth of items she was accused of stealing from her employer were a handbag, lipstick and shoes, apart from a number of clothes.

Over 70,000 Expats Affected: Kuwait Cancels Residency Permits For Foreign Workers Aged Over 60

More than 70,000 expatriates will be forced to leave Kuwait, as its government implemented a decision to ban residency permits of foreign workers aged 60.

The new legislation was implemented last January 1, according to the Kuwaiti Public Authority.

It also includes expats who only finished high school.

This move was imposed to redress the increasing imbalance between the population of citizens and expatriates.

Those who fall under these two category will have to leave after the expiry of their residency by the end of 2021.

The decision includes expatriates who work in professional sectors such as construction, car repair and restaurants, according to Xinhua news.

Among those who will be affected by the decision is 62-year-old Filipina Lynn.

Lynn has been working in the Gulf state for 15 years.

With the expiry of her residency visa this February, she will be left with no choice but to go back to the Philippines for good.

At present expat workers account for around 3.4 million of the country’s 4.8 million people.

UAE Dubai Gov’t Employees Who Received First Dose Of COVID-19 Vaccine Mandated To Take PCR Test For Monitoring Purposes

The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) announced that employees are now required to take the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or swab test every seven days for those who have only received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

In an announcement on their Twitter account on Monday, FAHR said this new rule will continue until they will take their second dose.

Earlier, FAHR announced that only those who are unvaccinated federal government employees have to mandatorily take a PCR test every seven days.

FAHR has also required them to furnish evidence of having received their second dose so they can be exempted from the requirement.

Meanwhile, unvaccinated employees have to take the PCR test every seven days at their own expense.

For employees who have medical conditions that hinder them to get vaccinated, they are also required to undergo a PCR test and the expenses will be borne by the company they are working for.

As for those consultants and experts who are required to attend meetings or be present at government office premises, they are required to have a negative PCR test result taken no more than three days prior.

Fully vaccinated consultants are exempted from this requirement.

Kitten Tests Positive For COVID-19 In South Korea

South Korean officials confirmed on Sunday that a kitten has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to Yonhap News Agency, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said this is the first virus case involving a pet.

The infected kitten was found at a religious facility in the southeastern city of Jinju in South Gyeongsang Province and tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

Officials have also found that a mother and daughter staying at the facility were raising three cats – a mother cat and two kittens – there. The infected one is one of the two kittens.

They suspect that the kitten got the virus from the mother and daughter who also tested positive of COVID-19.

It is very rare for pets to transmit the virus to humankind, a government official said citing health experts.

Prime Minister Chung urged health authorities to look into the possibility of transmissions between humankind and animals to transparently share the findings for people who live with pets are often exposed to them.

The farm ministry was also asked to consult with health authorities to prepare guidelines for pet owners.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a small number of pet cats and dogs that have been reported to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 in several countries, including the United States.

One ferret was also reported positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Slovenia.

Most of these pets became sick after contact with people with COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also noted dogs and cats in contact with humans that tested positive for COVID-19. However, there is no evidence that these animals can transmit the disease to humans and spread it.

OFWs repatriated due to COVID-19 pandemic now more than 400,000

More than 400,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were repatriated as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the numbers have reached 416,000 to date.

In an interview with CNN Philippines, Bello added that there are still 100,000 others initially applying for repatriation.

However, there are some who have backed out after they’ve been vaccinated in their respective countries.

This would now bring down the number of OFWs waiting to return to Manila to 50,000.

Bello mentioned most of those who opted to stay are OFWs from the Middle East who said they will instead look for reemployment opportunities.

He added that those who have been vaccinated have higher chances of reemployment there.

Vatican Announces Pope Francis To Miss Events Due To Flare Up Of Leg Pain

The Holy See Press Office released a statement through Matteo Bruni that says among the events he will be missing include the Mass for the Sunday of the Word of God in St. Peter’s Basilica. Archbishop Rino Fisichella will instead preside over the celebration.

Pope Francis will not preside over upcoming celebrations on Sunday and Monday as he is suffering from a bout of sciatica.

On Sunday noon, he will however lead the Angelus prayer in the Library of the Apostolic Palace.

His meeting with the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See on Monday has also been postponed.

He will not preside over Vespers for the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at the Basilica St. Paul. Cardinal Kurt Koch, the president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, will preside over this and the event will go ahead as planned.

This is not the first time Pope Francis missed celebrations due to his ailment.

Last December, he could not take part in religious services over the new Year’s holiday.

The 84-year-old pope has long been suffering from sciatica, a condition which causes pain to radiate from the lower back along the sciatic nerve to the lower part of the body.
