Son’s death anniv becomes luck charm of Pinay who won AED500,000 (PHP6.5M) in Mahzooz raffle

A Filipina based in Sharjah who bought a ticket for the Mahzooz raffle last March 8, the anniversary of his son’s death, took home AED500,000 or approximately PHP6.5 million pesos.

The 38-year-old Pinay expat matched five out of six numbers to split the one million dirham to a Pakistani national named Farhan during the raffle draw on March 13, reported Gulf News.

Catherine, who is married and two other kids, said she felt “something big was going to happen” on the day she bought the ticket.

“That day, I had a feeling that I just couldn’t understand. I just knew that something big was going to happen,” she said.

Catherine lost her child a few years ago to a rare disease called biliary atresia, a liver disorder that requires a transplant.

Catherine also shared how she got the winning numbers 3, 8, 19, 24, 25 and 47.

“The numbers I chose are all related to us. 3 is my eldest son’s birthday, 8 is the anniversary of the death of my second son, 19 is my youngest son’s birthday, 24 is my birthday and 25 appeared in my dreams,” she said.

As for her plans for the prize, Catherine bared that she intends to share it with her family and donate to their church as well as patients suffering from biliary atresia.

“This money will be spread out – we will give a portion to the church, donate to biliary atresia patients, give some to my siblings and start a business of our own,” she said.

Philippines House Bill 9175

Lawmakers approve bill providing permanent validity of birth, marriage certificates.

The House of Representatives has passed on second reading a bill that will give permanent validity to birth and marriage certificates. 

These documents were issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority and National Statistics Office. 

The lower house has approved House Bill No. 9175 or the “Permanent Validity of the Certificates of Live Birth, Death, and Marriage Act.”

Under the proposed measure, certificates of live birth, death, and marriage issued, signed, certified, or authenticated by the PSA and its predecessor, the NSPO, and local civil registries will be valid regardless of the date of issuance.

“National government agencies and instrumentalities, government-owned and controlled corporations, local government units, private companies, private and public educational institutions, and other non-government entities are prohibited from requiring the submission of another or newer copies of certificates of live birth, death, or marriage, and reports of birth, death or marriage when a valid certificate can already be presented,” the bill said.

The bill however clearly states that documents should be intact, readable, and still visibly contain the authenticity and security features for it to become valid.

“In cases when the texts on the certificate appear illegible, or an administrative correction or a judicial decree has been approved, the concerned person shall thus submit new, amended, or updated certificate,” the bill added.

UAE to provide AED 2.2B housing loans for Emiratis, waives repayments for retirees, families of deceased citizens

Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, has ordered housing loans to be disbursed to citizens in Abu Dhabi, with retirees and families of deceased mortgagors to be exempt from loan repayments.

Coinciding with Eid al-Fitr, the total value of the loans and exemptions is AED2.21bn, with 1,656 citizens to benefit.

The noble initiative comes in implementation of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s directives as part of the Ghadan 21, Abu Dhabi’s accelerator programme, to increase home loans for Emiratis, coinciding with Eid al-Fitr.

Lucio Tan Admitted To Hospital Due To COVID-19

Business tycoon Lucio Tan was hospitalized after contracting COVID-19, his daughter confirmed on Saturday.

In an Instagram post, Vivienne Tan thanked everyone who prayed for his father’s swift recovery.

“He is in stable condition, responding well, and recovering,” she said.

Vivienne also asked for some privacy at this time.

“Please continue to pray for his speedy recovery. Thank you,” she wrote.

Lucio Tan, 86, is the chairman of MacroAsia and LT Group.

He also owns Philippine Airlines and Philippine National Bank.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte flies to Singapore

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio confirms that she flew to Singapore on Tuesday.

“Yes. I am on leave and I have a travel authority from DILG,” she told Inquirer.net in a text message.

The presidential daughter however refused to disclose the details of her Singapore trip.

Duterte-Carpio arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 from Davao on board a Philippine Airlines flight around 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

She later boarded a Singapore Airlines flight at 2PM together with one of her children, a nanny, and a member of the Presidential Security Group.

This is not the first time Duterte-Carpio went to Singapore. She went there last year for a medical treatment

Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve no longer holidays in PH this 2021

Filipinos should expect fewer non-working days this year as three dates that have long been traditional holidays are now “special working days” in order to help the economy recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a proclamation reducing the number of holidays this 2021..

In Proclamation 1107, the President made the following days as “special working days.”
• Nov. 2, 2021 – All Souls’ Day
• Dec. 24, 2021 – Christmas Eve
• Dec. 31 – New Year’s Eve

The three dates were previously special non-working holidays.

“For the country to recover from the adverse economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need to encourage economic productivity by, among others, minimizing work disruption and commemorating some special holidays as special (working) days instead,” Duterte said.

Duterte previously lamented that the Philippines is losing Php2 billion a day due to the restrictions imposed against COVID-19.

“According to the Secretary of Finance, araw araw ngayon hanggang matapos ‘tong COVID, araw araw we are losing P2 billion na pera para sana ‘yun sa mga tao,” Duterte said in a speech on Monday night.


Duterte said that the Filipinos could’ve started earning money but the economy itself prohibits them to do so.

“The workers, the Filipino workers would have earned that money kung ang ekonomiya natin gumagalaw,” he added.

The National Economic and Development Authority said that Filipinos lost Php1.4 trillion in 2020 due to quarantines.

“Lahat ng bayan ngayon ng buong mundo, bagsak. Talagang bagsak. Tayo, maganda na sana. No’ng hindi dumating ‘yung COVID we were doing fine. Hindi naman very good. We were doing good. Tapos dumating ‘yung COVID. Walang kita,” Duterte said.

The Philippines also recorded a -9.5% gross domestic product in 2020 — the worst economic statistic recorded in the history of the Philippines since 1947.

The burgeoning population of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE can be attributed to the safety of the country, according to a straw poll conducted by the Filipino Times—following the release of the results of the National Happiness and Wellbeing Survey. The year-long study of the Ministry of Community Development shows that 93 percent of residents said they are ‘proud to live in the UAE’ and 8 out of 10 residents said ‘they are living a meaningful life’ in the emirates. In terms of safety,  92 percent of the 10,000 respondents aged 15 and above said they feel safe walking alone at night.

Her Excellency Hessa Essa Buhumaid, Minister for Community Development and Chairwoman of the Wellbeing Council, said that the positive response of the residents in the latest National Happiness and Wellbeing Survey reflect the UAE’s vision in spearheading initiatives that contribute to the general welfare of everyone living in the country.

“These development ideas enhance the UAE’s pioneering aspirations to achieve the best wellbeing standards through qualitative projects and initiatives launched by the national task forces, bringing together various government authorities to make great efforts in promoting people’s wellbeing, especially in the exceptional circumstances surrounding the population this year,” said Buhumaid.

Philippine Consul General in Dubai Paul Raymund Cortes said that apart from securing the well-being and safety of all those who wish to come to the UAE, the host government has also been very strategic in terms of identifying networks and policies that would enable migrants of different professions to search for economic opportunities for them in this country.

“The reputation of the UAE as a safe haven for migrants who wish to fulfill their ambitions and reach for their goals is grounded on the host government’s warm welcome to the over 9 million expats in the country,” he said.

“The UAE has also been reputed to be a hotbed of innovation which allows business and entrepreneurial acumen to develop and further grow in this country, which will in turn allow more expats to come to the UAE to enjoy these innovations and developments and be an active contributor towards these goals as well,” he added.

Welcome to the safest country

Filipinos in the UAE salute Abu Dhabi after it was named the world’s safest city for the fifth consecutive year; it is joined by Sharjah and Dubai in the top 10 list compiled by the crowdsourced data website Numbeo. These rankings are beyond just numbers; to a great extent, they foretell not only a city’s or nation’s success, but also the residents’ future. This was shown by the National Happiness and Wellbeing Survey, wherein 84 percent of the UAE population is found to be generally optimistic in life.

The Philippine Consul General added that Filipinos, along with 200 other nationalities, become determined to play an equal role in this country’s development due to the security they provide.

“When people do not feel uncomfortable with the security provided—meaning that they have strong faith in the host government and their policy towards building a safe and stable society—people become more focused on building economic opportunities and strengthening techniques and expertise that would make the lives of everyone easier, more efficient, more effective, and more attuned to helping more people,” he said.

Fair treatment 

When Anabelle Fernandez first arrived in the UAE 15 years ago, she was filled with hope and optimism that this would be her key to helping her family as the new breadwinner.

The UAE did not disappoint her. Fernandez now treats the country as her second home as she fell in love with how the UAE society treats everyone fairly without looking at someone’s country of origin, line of work, etc.

“In UAE they treat all people equally – walang mahirap o mayaman. Ever since pa naman (way back 15 years ago), napakaganda na mamuhay dito sa UAE. All you just have to do is obey and follow the rules. And life is very convenient; you can reach out for help from authorities anywhere you are,” said Fernandez.

Haven for breadwinners

Perlita Malupeng, who has been working for over two decades as a household worker in the country, also told TFT her inspiring story and gratitude for the UAE.

“Malaki na ang naitulong sa akin ng UAE sa pamamalagi ko dito – unang una na doon ay napagtapos ko sa pag-aaral ang aking anak hanggang kolehiyo. Nagkaroon na din ako ng pampundar para makabili ng sariling bahay at lupa. Bukod dito, natulungan ko din makapunta at makapagtrabaho ang aking dalawang kapatid,” said Malupeng.

Meanwhile, Robbie Tirol, a hotel staff working for nearly 10 years in Abu Dhabi, said the UAE helped him transform his dreams into reality.

“Sa nine years ko po dito sa UAE, unti-unti pong natutupad ang aking mga pangarap. Nakabili po ako ng lupa at nakapag pundar din ako ng sarili kong bahay. Patuloy ko ding nasusuportahan ang aking pamilya financially sa pagpapadala sa kanila buwan-buwan. Syempre, marami na rin akong napuntahan at nakapag-tour na rin ako sa iba’t ibang bansa mula nung dumating ako dito sa UAE,” said Tirol.

OFW Marissa Albano said that since she began working here in 1992, she has enjoyed the pleasures of feeling safe no matter where she goes at any time of the day – a testament to the UAE’s commitment to safety.

“I think we Filipinos find happiness in UAE from the high standard of security, and police patrolling anytime of the day. We can walk freely, we can do our shopping anytime without worries. Everything about this country is full of surprises and worth living for!” said Albano.

Overseas Filipinos living in the country express their gratefulness for the UAE’s leadership, whose vision is to ensure that everyone feels the convenience and safety that will make most expatriates treat it as their second home.

“Saludo po ako sa mga pinuno ng UAE at taos pusong nagpapasalamat sa lahat ng kanilang pagsasa-ayos ng mga batas at pagpapatupad na naaayon sa kapakanan ng lahat. Dito sa UAE, panatag ka na kakampi mo ang batas ‘pag nasa tama ka,” said Malupeng.

They also underscored the importance of free COVID-19 vaccination, which is being provided by the UAE government for everyone, on an optional basis.

The brainstorming retreat of the UAE government has resulted in the approval of a revitalized National Agenda, which will serve as the country’s framework for the next half-century.

With its details yet to be released, the framework will steer the country to a new direction and generate new strategic projects, which are aimed at boosting the competitiveness of vital sectors and sustaining economic stability within the next 50 years.

Steven Seagal Grace Launch Of UAE’s First Fully Electric Tracker Vehicle At IDEX

Hollywood star Steven Seagal personally unveiled the first fully electric tracked vehicle manufactured in the UAE during the International Defence Exhibition or IDEX in Abu Dhabi.

The vehicle called Storm, is considered first-of-its-kind hybrid, tracked and amphibious vehicle for the military’s special operations, medical evacuations, and peacekeeping.

The vehicle also featured the latest technologies in ballistic, IED, and mine blast protection.

Seagal is the brand ambassador for STREIT, a defense company that makes sophisticated armored vehicles based in Ras Al Khaimah.

In a press conference, he likened the vehicle’s design as a “crossover between a Lamborghini and a stealth fighter”. He added that it “is one of the head-turners at IDEX.”

This is the first major public event in the emirate since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Three other vehicles were also launched, including Dhabi, a state-of-the-art mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicle; Nisr, a mounted infantry troop carrier and ground support vehicle; and Condor, a cost-effective MRAP. 

Journalists Doris Bigornia Undergo Open Heart Surgery

Veteran broadcaster Doris Bigornia has suffered a heart attack over the weekend and will undergo an open heart surgery according to his radio show partner and ABS-CBN News anchor Alvin Elchico.

“Bago po tayo mag-umpisa dahil marami po kasi ang nagtatanong so, nagpaalam po ako sa pamilya ni Mutya ng Masa Doris Bigornia na sabihin po sa inyo, pinapasabi lang po, ang Mutya ng Masa, siya po’y inatake sa puso noong Linggo, papuntang Lunes,” Elchico said.

“Siya po’y sinugod sa ospital at ngayon po’y nasa ICU. Ka-kaailanganin po ng ano eh, open-heart surgery. So ang pamilya po ay humihingi po ng panalangin, so sa ngalan po ng pamilya ni Doris Bigornia, ang Mutya ng Masa, kami po sa DZMM Teleradyo ay humihingi po ng inyong panalangin,” he added.

Elchico revealed that Bigornia is conscious and has talked to him through the phone.

“Ipagadasal po natin na mapagtagumpayan po ni Doris ang susuungin po niyang pagsubok kasi hanggang ngayon (nasa ICU). Nakaka-usap ko siya, conscious po si Doris, pero kakailanganin po niya ‘yong open heart surgery pagkatapos po ng atake sa puso,” he further said.

Some of Bigornia’s colleagues are asking for prayers and support for the veteran journalist.

“Please join us in praying for our very good friend @DorisBigornia as she goes thru heart surgery after suffering a heart attack. Doray, kaya mo yan. Maraming nagmamahal sa yo. Fighting Doray!!!! We love you,” reporter MJ Felipe said. 

Sheikh Mohammed Commends Dubai Metro Staff For His Kindness

On January 23, journalist Ashleigh Stewart tweeted about the said employee at the Emirates Towers metro station, who she said helped her when her metro was out of credit and she forgot her wallet.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of the Dubai, praised an employee of Dubai Metro for his kindness.

“My metro card was out of credit & I forgot my wallet. Bearing witness to my idiocy, this staff Superman topped me up out of his own $$ & wouldn’t accept any attempt to repay him later,” she said. “Kindness. That’s it.”

Sheikh Mohammed retweeted Stewart’s post and shared his admiration for the staff.

“A true example of a real civil servant,” he tweeted.

 

President Duterte Prefers To Be Injected With COVID-19 Vaccine In The Butt

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said the President’s inoculation will be done in private because of his preferred mode of vaccination, a report by Manila Bulletin said.



Looking forward to seeing President Rodrigo Duterte receiving his COVID-19 vaccine in public? That may not happen as President Duterte prefers to be injected with the vaccine in the buttock area.

When asked if the decision is final, Roque said: “I think so he has said so. He said since he wants to be injected in the buttocks, it cannot be public.”

In several nations that have started their vaccination drives, COVID vaccines have been injected in the muscle of a person’s upper arm.

To help boost the public confidence in the government’s planned vaccination drive, the Palace earlier said the President is willing to be injected first with the coronavirus vaccine.

The President, however, opted to follow the footsteps of the British monarchs who were vaccinated away from the television cameras.

The Philippine government plans to give free inoculations once the first batch of vaccine supplies will be made available arrive next month.

In a Palace press briefing, Roque acknowledged that the President is still the most effective communicator in government.

“In the communication plan, the President is important,” Roque said. “We recognize the President is the best communicator for NTF (National Task Force) and our anti-COVID-19 efforts,” he added.

In a meeting with the President Monday night, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. admitted that public confidence in the vaccination drive is low.

Galvez mentioned that the President will play a key role to help boost the vaccination drive.

“This is our problem that we should all work on. We know that our Mayor, Mr. President, will be of great help because the willingness of our countrymen to get vaccinated is decreasing because of the adverse effects of certain brands,” Galvez said. 

Sara rejects Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022 elections

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has rejected anew calls for her to run for president with her father, the incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte, as her running mate.


In rejecting the call, Duterte-Carpio said “continuity is not based on kinship.”

It was the President’s chief legal counsel, Salvador Panelo, who floated the idea of a “Duterte-Duterte” tandem in 2022, with the mayor as president and the older Duterte as vice president, a report by Manila Times said.

However, Duterte-Carpio insisted that she is not keen on running for president in 2022 if the purpose is to just to continue the gains of her father’s administration.

“Continuity is not based on kinship. Anybody can continue the gains of a previous administration, President Duterte did that for President Aquino,” Duterte-Carpio told The Manila Times in a text message.

Duterte-Carpio was referring to his father’s predecessor, former president Benigno Aquino III.

In the report, Panelo said that a “Duterte-Duterte” tandem “has no legal impediment” as the Chief Executive could still run for vice president when his term expires in 2022.

“The continuity of the Duterte leadership is the real issue here,” Panelo said in a speech at a dinner-fellowship hosted by Bayambang town Mayor Cesar Quiambao and attended by this province’s prominent political leaders on Saturday.

Panelo said that the President has shown a strong political will to implement economic reforms and clean government in the country like his campaign against illegal drugs, corruption, criminality, insurgency and poverty.

Panelo was also confident that the daughter-father team would be acceptable to Filipinos as this was nothing new.

He cited Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Benigno Aquino 3rd, daughter and son of late presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Corazon Aquino, have assumed the highest office in the land.

Panelo said Duterte-Duterte tandem already happened in Davao City when Duterte and his daughter ran for mayor and vice mayor.

Duterte served as the vice mayor of Davao City when his daughter was the mayor from 2010 to 2013. 

Maid In Dubai Accused By Employer Of Stealing Clothes She Wore In Instagram Photo

An Asian maid (nationality withheld in this report) is set to stand trial today to hear the verdict of Dubai Public Prosecution on the theft charges filed against her by her employer.

The 27-year-old maid was arrested by Dubai Police after they received a complaint that she took some of her female employer’s belongings without consent, according to a report of Gulf News.

Among the AED500 worth of items she was accused of stealing from her employer were a handbag, lipstick and shoes, apart from a number of clothes.

The complaint was lodged after her male employer, 26, reportedly saw on Instagram that the maid was wearing his wife’s dress in one of her photos.

When they searched the maid’s quarter, the couple reportedly found the clothes in her closet along with other “stolen” items.

Over 70,000 Expats Affected: Kuwait Cancels Residency Permits For Foreign Workers Aged Over 60

More than 70,000 expatriates will be forced to leave Kuwait, as its government implemented a decision to ban residency permits of foreign workers aged 60.

The new legislation was implemented last January 1, according to the Kuwaiti Public Authority.


It also includes expats who only finished high school.

This move was imposed to redress the increasing imbalance between the population of citizens and expatriates.

Those who fall under these two category will have to leave after the expiry of their residency by the end of 2021.

The decision includes expatriates who work in professional sectors such as construction, car repair and restaurants, according to Xinhua news.

Among those who will be affected by the decision is 62-year-old Filipina Lynn.


Lynn has been working in the Gulf state for 15 years.

With the expiry of her residency visa this February, she will be left with no choice but to go back to the Philippines for good.

At present expat workers account for around 3.4 million of the country’s 4.8 million people.

Kitten Tests Positive For COVID-19 In South Korea

South Korean officials confirmed on Sunday that a kitten has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).


According to Yonhap News Agency, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said this is the first virus case involving a pet.

The infected kitten was found at a religious facility in the southeastern city of Jinju in South Gyeongsang Province and tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

Officials have also found that a mother and daughter staying at the facility were raising three cats – a mother cat and two kittens – there. The infected one is one of the two kittens.

They suspect that the kitten got the virus from the mother and daughter who also tested positive of COVID-19.

It is very rare for pets to transmit the virus to humankind, a government official said citing health experts.

Prime Minister Chung urged health authorities to look into the possibility of transmissions between humankind and animals to transparently share the findings for people who live with pets are often exposed to them.

The farm ministry was also asked to consult with health authorities to prepare guidelines for pet owners.


According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a small number of pet cats and dogs that have been reported to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 in several countries, including the United States.

One ferret was also reported positive for SARS-CoV-2 in Slovenia.

Most of these pets became sick after contact with people with COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also noted dogs and cats in contact with humans that tested positive for COVID-19. However, there is no evidence that these animals can transmit the disease to humans and spread it.
