1. FIRST AND FOREMOST: DON’T CHEAT THE SYSTEM!
This is the most important tip before we head into the rest because you do not want to try to cheat the system. I know this makes me sound like a bit of a downer but I promise you that if you buy followers and if you play the whole follow, unfollow game it will come back to bite you. Instagram is really cracking down on shady activity right now, so if you get caught your account could get disabled. It’s just really not worth it.
2. OPTIMIZE YOUR BIO
Your bio is the first thing that people see when they come to your profile (aside from your images of course), so you really need to make sure it’s clear and represents who you are and what you post about on Instagram. Make it fun, make it memorable, BUT make it snappy! Really make sure that it represents who you are and what you post about.
3. BE ACTIVE AND REAL
Active goes much further than posting every single day and replying to your own comments on your own account. Leaving meaningful and thoughtful comments on other accounts is being truly active and REAL. This will really help kick-start your progress on Instagram and get your profile in front of others.
4. INTERACT WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE
Find people that are most likely to be interested in the topics you’re interested in and that you’re posting about and interact with those people. These are the kind of people that will be interested in your content and will follow you.
5. YOUR PROFILE PICTURE SHOULD REPRESENT YOU IN SECONDS
If your picture doesn’t look great then pick an image that represents who you are, what your Instagram is about, and that looks very enticing so that people will want to click on your profile.
6. USE ALL THE HASHTAGS
When it comes to Instagram, why shoot yourself in the foot and not give yourself every opportunity you have to succeed. Use all thirty hashtags!
7. IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY
If you want to stand out on Instagram, a creative and consistent theme is the way to go! So if your photos aren’t beautiful or engaging enough then you’re probably never going to succeed. All you need is a smartphone and a bit of understanding of how light works, how image composition works and a little bit of knowledge about editing and that’s really it.
8. DEVELOP A CONSISTENT EDITING STYLE
This goes back to what we just discussed, but you need to learn more about image editing if you want to succeed on Instagram. It’s very simple. Lightroom is a software that edits amazingly or you can just do it on your smartphone with apps like VSCO or A Color Story. These apps can save different presets with filters that can help make your feed look more cohesive.
9. USE THE RIGHT HASHTAGS
Top hashtags are usually oversaturated so try for smaller niched tags that will really give your account a boost. With a little bit of research from your competition, you’ll be able to find relevant hashtags to use. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment or create your own. The right hashtags can increase your visibility.
10. TAG YOUR LOCATION
Studies show that images with the location included can perform up to 79 percent better with a higher engagement rate, so include a location.
11. WRITE A GREAT CAPTION
If you write a caption (description) that really connects with your followers or you ask a question that generates genuine comments, that alone can explode your engagement and your growth.
12. INCLUDE A CALL TO ACTION
Call to actions can be anything from a question related to the picture you uploaded in your description, to a link in your bio to your favorite travel locations or latest blog post. Even if you’re a small Instagrammer and you’re kind of worried about not getting a response, just do it. Call to actions create engagement and makes you look like an authority in your field.
13. TAG OTHER PEOPLE
Now, you don’t want to overdo this because it will become very annoying if your photo isn’t relevant to the other accounts that you are tagging BUT if it is and the other account features images that use their tag, this could even get you a re-post and more followers.
14. STAY ON TOPIC
I know this can be difficult for a lot of people because as humans we are very multifaceted and we have many different varied interests but on Instagram, you really want to narrow your interests down to two to three subjects. This will cause less confusion for your followers as you grow your account.
15. POST ON TRENDING TOPICS
Post within trending topics such as International Women’s Day, Human Rights Day or National Puppy Day (March, 23rd) and many others. This can really help other people discover your account and this also keeps your account current and up-to-date.
16. KEEP A CONSISTENT SCHEDULE
Post at similar times every day so that your followers know what to expect and when to expect your photos. They will get into the habit of going to your account and look forward to it the days of.
17. POST AT THE OPTIMAL TIMES
When it comes to determining the right time to post, you can use logic and post when people use Instagram the most like in the mornings, at work at lunchtime and before going to bed. But you can also be a little more scientific about it and use data from services like Iconosquare or the Instagram business profile.
18. SWITCH TO A BUSINESS ACCOUNT
When you switch to an Instagram business account you will have access to stats and analytics at your fingertips. You’ll be able to determine when the best time is to post, who your followers are and where they come from.
19. REPLY TO YOUR COMMENTS
In the beginning, this should be fairly easy but as you begin to grow it’ll become more and more difficult. But none the less it’s very important. If someone took the time to write a genuine reply, take that seriously and engage with them. This will create engagement and a genuine brand message for your new followers to see.
20. USE INSTAGRAM STORIES AND ALWAYS HAVE ONE ACTIVE
You’ll benefit from Instagram stories in several ways… You will get more recognition from your existing followers because they’re going to see your face as the first thing they see when they log into Instagram and another is that the Instagram algorithm secretly favors people who are really active on Instagram stories. So by using Instagram stories, you’re sending a signal to the algorithm that you should be ranking higher in the newsfeed.
